About

Twenty kilometres of tunnels cut into soft volcanic rock beneath the Appian Way, holding the tombs of sixteen early popes and tens of thousands of Christians buried here before the practice was legal above ground. No self guided visits are allowed, a guide leads every group and it is easy to see why once inside, the tunnels genuinely disorient without one. It also happens to be a reliably cool escape from a July afternoon, several degrees colder below ground than the road above it.
