About

Nearly two thousand years old and still the largest unreinforced concrete dome ever built, with a single oculus open to the sky that lets rain fall straight onto the marble floor below. Raphael is buried inside, along with two Italian kings, in a building that spent centuries as a working church rather than a ruin, which is likely why it survived this intact. Entry has been a small paid ticket since 2023, booked for a specific time slot rather than a queue at the door.
