About

Nearly two thousand years after gladiators fought here, the arena still overwhelms on first sight, four tiers of arches that once held fifty thousand spectators. The arena floor and underground hypogeum sections require a separate timed add on ticket, and they are worth the extra booking step to see where the animal lifts and trapdoors actually worked. Buy online days ahead, the ticket office queue at the entrance can run over an hour in high season.
