Shaped like the ancient stadium it was built over, the piazza's long oval still shows in every building line around it. Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers sits at the centre, one river god for each continent the Church knew of, facing a facade Bernini's rival Borromini designed on the church behind it. Portrait artists and street performers work the piazza most of the day, and the cafes ringing it charge tourist prices for a coffee worth paying once for the seat.
